The renowned English football commentator Martin Tyler was born on 14th September, 1945 in Chester. Martin is also a fervent follower of Woking F.C. and was elected as the FA Premier League Commentator of The Decade.
Martin Tyler at one point of time played football for University of East Anglia where he was enrolled as an student of sociology. During those days Martin got his first commentary offer form the office of London Weekend TV, Seizing the opportunity Martin left his centre-forward position of Corinthian-Casuals in order to take up football commentary as profession. It turned out to be the first ITV football show to taste success. Though his job involved only production work, he did tape record his commentary during one of the matches and gave it to his bosses, which received paltry attention from them.
Martin Tyler ultimately got his much awaited break when Gerry Williams, the regular commentator for Southern Television of ITV was indisposed. On a Cold Saturday Tyler debuted in the arena of commentary on 28th day of December 1974. Martin Tyler commented on a Second Division match between Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday F.C. His commentary had the power to hold the audiences, the first display of craft resulted in more work and soon Martin was a regular commentator.
Yorkshire Television beckoned Martin Tyler in 1976 to replace Keith Macklin where he started leaving significant impact on ITV Sport Management. They included him in the 1978 World Cup team. In 1979, he covered the European Cup Final, his first. Martin Tyler changed his region again when he left for Granada to replace Gerald Sinstadt in 1981. The World Cup in 1982 was memorable for Martin for both professional and personal reasons. Not only did he lead ITV's World Cup team wherein he covered every England game and also the final accompanied by Ian St John, but also met a girl in Spain who would go on to be his wife.
Throughout the 1980s Tyler got the recognition as second best commentator after Brian Moore. Even though Martin was the leader of commentary team for European Championships of 1984 and had commented on all the major clashes of the 1986 World Cup, for the final, Brian Moore took a flight out of London to comment on what would have been Martin’s first World Cup match. His only work had been that of an anchor from London till then. This frustration was too much to let go off lightly. Thus, Martin signed for British Satellite Broadcasting on being told to so by his agent John Hockey in 1990. This time Martin’s job involved presenting live broadcasts of FA Cup games, Scottish League and also England internationals. Tyler could still be heard on ITV for two more years as they aired his commentary for the overseas matches of the Football League. British Satellite Broadcasting’s sports channel rechristened as Sky Sports in 1991 after the former merged with Sky. Martin has had a glorious time leading the Sky commentary team which is acclaimed by the critics as he has spearheaded the FA Premier League’s coverage from its inception in 1992 till date.

Martin Tyler does not get as many important matches to cover as he used to on account of a new rotation policy implemented by Sky. Martin Tyler presented Champions League final of 2005 only for Australian TV. English Premier League is still covered by him regularly as he hosts the show aired with Saturday matches "Football First" and also comments on the matches. These commentaries are fed internationally through TWI.
The rival broadcasting corporations namely British Broadcasting Corporation and Setanta Sports have reportedly offered lucrative contract to Marin Tyler.
